Xanthelasma [zan-thel-az-muh] are yellowish, opaque, fatty lumps on the eyelids. They are deposits of cholesterol and can occur in a number of areas, most often on the inner corners of the eyes, and are frequently symmetrical in appearance (xanthelasma appearing in the same place or places on both eyes).
Xanthelasma are benign, but cause people a lot of distress because of their prominent discolouration; the condition developing most frequently in women of middle age upwards.

In line with best practice, any patient with xanthelasma will be strongly advised to have their blood-cholesterol levels checked. We have a private GP and a clinical nutritionist on our expert team at The Clinic Holland Park, West London, who can provide first-class help and support.
Xanthelasma can be surgically removed under local anaesthetic at The Clinic Holland Park. To minimise scarring, all incisions are closed up with self-dissolving sutures.
After xanthelasma surgery, you will be given an antibiotic ointment to treat the area for the following week; and be advised to apply a cold compress to the area every few hours to help lessen post-operative swelling and bruising. Recovery takes approximately 7 days. A follow-up appointment to review your results and recovery takes place from 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.
