Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT). It is an aesthetic medical procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile needles in order to induce tissue remodelling via the production of your body’s own collagen.

FAQs
The microneedling itself takes about 15-20 minutes. However, the appointment will be longer, to allow for a local anaesthetic cream to be applied on the area to be treated and for sufficient numbing to take effect (35 minutes). Overall, your appointment will last 60-90 minutes.
Microneedling using the SkinPen® is safe: its single-use, sterile needle cartridge is built with safety in mind. The SkinPen® is also covered by a proprietary BioSheath that is discarded after each treatment; this acts as a barrier to prevent cross contamination from the handpiece between procedures. No other manufacturer can make these safety and hygiene claims, which is part of the reason why SkinPen® is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device.
There are few risks overall, if you follow the advice of your aesthetician. Post procedure, if you do not follow advice regarding the use of topical skincare and limiting sun exposure and exercise within the advised downtime, then complications might occur – such as an infection. Therefore, please follow all your aesthetician’s advice and guidance.
SkinPen® should not be used on patients who have any of the following:
- active skin cancer in the treatment area(s)
- open wounds, sores, or irritated skin in the treatment area(s)
- an allergy to stainless steel or anaesthetics
- a haemorrhagic (bleeding) disorder or haemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction;
or who are:
- pregnant or breastfeeding
- currently taking drugs with the ingredient isotretinoin (such as Accutane).
With the use of topical anaesthetic cream prior to treatment, most patients report feeling only the slight vibration of SkinPen® during the procedure.
Based on your individual goals, your aesthetician may recommend a course of procedures; a typical starting protocol would be 3 SkinPen® treatments spaced at monthly intervals. Maintenance might require multiple treatments.
The skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately after the procedure, similar to mild-to-moderate sunburn. The most common treatment responses are dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching, peeling, discomfort, tenderness, and burning. These conditions should resolve over time without any further complications, and mostly within 24-48 hours. Your aesthetician will supply you with Skinfuse® LIFT: a clean, non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post treatment.
