The BBL® ClearRed Protocol

Introducing The BBL® ClearRed Protocol – a trailblazing treatment for Rosacea. Exclusively at The Clinic Holland Park, West London.

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that affects the face, primarily; presenting as persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, flushing, and (in some cases) acne-like bumps or thickened skin. The skin may be sensitive, with sensations of stinging or burning, and rosacea typically manifests on the cheeks, nose, and forehead.

The BBL® ClearRed Protocol Overview

Rosacea affects approximately 5% of adults; and is more prevalent in women than in men. It can significantly impact on a person’s quality of life due to its highly visible and often unpredictable nature. Treatment of rosacea can be challenging, because the associated redness and vascular components often prove resistant to conventional therapies, and require advanced, targeted interventions for meaningful improvement.

As a chronic disorder, rosacea has no cure. However, effective management strategies can substantially alleviate symptoms (such as flare-ups and persistent redness); and this is where we can help. At The Clinic Holland Park, we specialise in cutting-edge solutions to address rosacea comprehensively. Our innovative approach employs a two-pronged treatment protocol combining Sciton’s Clear Suite with Sciton’s BBL® (BroadBand Light), which are both recognised as premier laser therapies for superior, long-lasting results. This synergistic method tackles both the deeper and the more superficial manifestations of rosacea, ensuring thorough vascular correction with minimal downtime and optimal safety.

  • Sciton’s Clear Suite targets deeper redness and larger vessels. Utilising a 1064nm Nd:YAG laser (in both its ClearV and ClearSilk applications), Sciton’s Clear Suite laser technology penetrates beneath the skin’s surface to selectively address deeper vascular structures and diffuse redness. Without any invasive procedures, Clear Suite can effectively eliminate larger veins and vessels, to promote a more even-toned complexion.
  • Sciton’s BBL® treats superficial redness and small broken vessels. This is the most advanced broadband light therapy currently available, and delivers precise energy to target pigmentation and superficial broken capillaries. BBL® eliminates small broken vessels while stimulating neocollagenesis for enhanced skin resilience. BBL® is particularly effective for reducing visible flushing and fine telangiectasias (also known as spider veins), resulting in a clearer, more uniform skin tone.

By combining these two groundbreaking technologies, The BBL® ClearRed Protocol provides unparalleled efficacy in its management of rosacea’s notoriously resistant symptoms, surpassing all single-modality treatments. Patients benefit from customised sessions tailored to their skin type and severity of their rosacea, which will result in sustained remission from these symptoms. The BBL ClearRed Protocol is pioneering in non-invasive skin revitalisation, specifically designed to address rosacea’s multiple vascular and pigmentation concerns, and with minimal downtime or disruption to daily life.

FAQs

The brilliance of The BBL® ClearRed Protocol lies in its multifaceted approach to the vascular and dermal imperfections of rosacea. ClearV employs a 1064nm Nd:YAG laser to precisely target and eliminate larger vascular lesions, spider veins, and prominent vessels, effectively collapsing them without compromising surrounding tissue. Complementing this, BBL® utilises broadband light energy to treat finer capillaries, diffuse redness and pigmentation irregularities, while bringing additional benefits through the stimulation of collagen production. In addition, ClearSilk delivers gentle laser energy to mitigate widespread erythema and promote further neocollagenesis, fostering a smoother, refined, more resilient skin barrier. Together, these technologies provide a comprehensive solution to rosacea that tackles vascular issues at varying depths and scales – from stubborn, deeper vessels to subtle surface flushing – to yield superior, long-lasting results that surpass all single-modality interventions.

Rosacea, a chronic skin condition, is often exacerbated by specific triggers that can lead to flare-ups (increased redness, inflammation, flushing, visible blood vessels, and discomfort). Understanding these triggers is essential for effective management of rosacea; and while individual responses vary, there are several factors that are known to trigger flare-ups.

  • Environment: Exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) rays is a primary trigger because it causes vascular dilation and inflammation. Wind, extreme temperatures (hot and cold), and changes in the weather also provoke flare-ups by irritating the skin barrier.
  • Diet: Certain food and drinks are common triggers that worsen symptoms. These include alcohol, which promotes flushing through vasodilation; hot drinks; spicy foods; along with chocolate, vanilla, soy sauce, yeast extract, liver, yoghurt, sour cream, and most cheeses.
  • Lifestyle and wellbeing: Emotional stress and anxiety can trigger episodes by activating the sympathetic nervous system, leading to increased blood flow to the face. Physical exertion (such as exercise), and overheating can also trigger flare-ups.
  • Medication: Vasodilator drugs (including beta-blockers), and niacin (vitamin B3) can induce flare-ups by widening blood vessels.
  • Skincare and cosmetics: Beware of skincare products or cosmetics that contain irritants.

Patients are advised to keep a personal trigger diary to identify their own trigger patterns, because susceptibility differs from person to person.

Because rosacea lacks a definitive cure, prevention strategies that focus on minimising flare-ups are important for day-to-day management of the condition.

  • Trigger avoidance: Systematically identify and eliminate personal triggers through lifestyle adjustments, such as limiting alcohol and spicy foods, managing stress through techniques like mindfulness or therapy, and moderating exercise intensity.
  • Sun protection: Consistent use of broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF30+ (at least) along with protective clothing, hats, and seeking shade, are crucial to shield against UV-induced flare-ups.
  • Skincare regime: Employ gentle, non-irritating products, including fragrance-free cleansers and moisturisers designed for sensitive skin. Avoid harsh exfoliants or alcohol-based toners that may disrupt the skin barrier.
  • Clinical interventions: Advanced options, such as laser therapies, can address persistent vascular issues; although these in-clinic treatments should complement your day-to-day preventive measures. The BBL® ClearRed Protocol is tailor-made for sufferers of rosacea.

Adhering to these day-to-day preventative strategies can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups, thus enhancing overall skin health as well as quality of life.

The BBL® ClearRed Protocol is ideally suited to treat a spectrum of conditions related to rosacea, including redness, broken capillaries, spider veins, vascular lesions, cherry angiomas, and diffuse facial erythema. It also enhances overall skin quality by reducing pigmentation disparities and stimulating collagen production, resulting in a more uniform, radiant complexion. Suitable for the face and body, and for most skin types (Fitzpatrick I-V). Please note that although Clear Suite is suitable for Fitzpatrick I-VI; BBL® is only suitable for Fitzpatrick I-V.

Patients can anticipate noticeable improvements within one to two weeks after treatment, with optimal outcomes manifesting over four to six weeks as the skin undergoes progressive regeneration and vascular resolution. Full results may continue to evolve for up to three months.

Preparation for The BBL® ClearRed Protocol is straightforward, with the emphasis on skin protection. We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning products for at least two weeks prior to treatment; as well as discontinuing the use of photosensitising medications or topical agents such as retinoids and other active ingredients (such as AHAs and BHAs).

Downtime is minimal, aligning with the non-invasive nature of this combination procedure. Mild redness, warmth, or bruising may occur, typically resolving within 24 to 48 hours. Patients can resume normal activities immediately, including the application of makeup if desired.

Yes: post-treatment care is essential for maximising benefits and safeguarding results. Avoid excessive heat (hot showers, saunas) for the first 72 hours post treatment. Importantly, patients should avoid direct exposure to the sun, and must apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF50+ diligently. Gentle skincare routines are encouraged to support healing.

For optimal results, we recommend three to six sessions of The BBL® ClearRed Protocol, spaced four to six weeks apart. Thereafter, maintenance treatments every six to twelve months will sustain results.
