In October 2025, the FDA published apprehensions about RF microneedling devices, particularly when employed inappropriately or by inadequately trained providers for dermatologic or aesthetic skin treatments. This statement highlighted reports of serious adverse effects, including: thermal burns, permanent scarring, subcutaneous fat loss (which may result in diminished facial volume and contour irregularities), physical disfigurement, and nerve damage. These complications arise from factors such as excessive energy delivery, incorrect device settings, or application of the device beyond cleared indications. The FDA emphasised that RF microneedling constitutes a medical procedure, not a mere cosmetic service; and advised healthcare providers to thoroughly discuss risks with patients while ensuring that only licensed, trained professionals perform treatments.

To address these potential downsides, at The Clinic Holland Park, we only employ the VirtueRF platform, which is an FDA-cleared RF microneedling system that is unique in its gentler, fractionated pulse-delivery mechanism. Unlike conventional devices that may deliver energy in a uniform (potentially aggressive) manner, VirtueRF fractions the pulses into adjustable sub-pulses, allowing for precise energy distribution without compromising efficacy. In addition, all of the sterile needles used in a VirtueRF device are insulated, which means that the sub-pulse energy is only delivered at the tip of the needle, rather than along the whole needle.  This also works to reduce risk of thermal damage to the skin, because the needle tip delivers the energy exactly where it is intended. As already noted, VirtueRF’s use of insulated needles for the precise delivery of energy allows for treatments to be meticulously customised. But there is further innovative technology in VirtueRF that sets it apart from its competitors:

• Advanced Cooling System (ACS): by controlling and maintaining the temperature of the cooling plate, the epidermis is protected and pain is reduced, enabling the delivery of safer and more powerful energy.
• Integrated Energy Control System (IECS): by setting the MHz mode according to the intention of the procedure with the same RF energy, various treatments are possible – from a large area with low density, to a narrow area with high density.
• Integrated Pulsed Radiofrequency System (IPRS): this implements a minimum pulse of 1,000 microseconds and allows the selection of a 1-10 pulse mode, which maximises the treatment effect and lessens pain. The longer the pulse, the greater the power and heat, the stronger the effect; while rests between pulse packs produce safer peaks with less risk of overheating. Pulse packs at 7-10 are especially effective in producing stronger neocollagenesis without any unwanted burning. • Minimum Depth Control System (MDCS): the microneedle can be adjusted in 60 steps: from 0.1mm to 6mm, in 0.1mm increments. This allows for precise treatments that can be performed at a desired depth – from the epidermis to the dermis.

In addition, there is minimal-to-zero downtime with VirtueRF. So while Morpheus8 (for example) is renowned for its deep penetration that yields great results in subdermal tightening, Morpheus8 also entails a more intensive recovery period, including redness and swelling that usually lasts for one to three days. A typical VirtueRF session commences with skin cleansing and the application of a topical anaesthetic, which will take approximately 30 minutes to numb the treatable area. During the procedure, patients may experience mild warmth or pricking sensations; any discomfort is greatly mitigated by the device’s cooling mechanisms. Finally, BNV EXO (a Korean growth-factor serum), is applied to the treated area, and absorbed by the skin immediately.

Post treatment, mild erythema (redness) or swelling may occur, which will resolve within hours. Downtime is negligible—patients often resume normal activities immediately.

To maximise results, aftercare prioritises hydration (but not active ingredients for at least 72 hours), sunscreen application (SPF50+), the avoidance of direct sun exposure, and gentle skincare.
